I’m going to show you how to pick the right goals for you. It’s simple to do and requires only your honesty.
Picking a goal doesn’t have to be hard. People ask me “What if I pick the wrong one? All that wasted time an energy.” They spin around and around in their head thinking they could have done this, but should have done that…
This is an unnecessary waste of time.
Your Goals Are YOUR Goals
Imagine it’s a year from now, and you are looking back on today. What results would you need to see in your life to feel like you absolutely rocked this year?
Whatever came to mind is probably a good target for a goal.
Now, it’s possible you came up empty, and have no idea what kind of results you want. You don’t know.
When I hear people say they don’t know, or don’t know what they wan’t and stop the conversation there, I get so angry.
It’s as if they are having this conversation in their brain.
There are no such thing as right or wrong goals.
Some Goals You Want, Some Goals You Don’t
Not everyone wants to lose 10 lbs. But i’d guess that far more people want to be as healthy and full of energy as possible.
Not everyone wants to travel to another country. But id guess that far more people want to beable to relax, and be fully present in their non work time.
You want what you want.
The sooner you are honest with yourself about it, the better off you will be.
When we talk about want, we are talking about desire.
The Key Question
That missing element is emotion. And that emotion is desire. Another word for desire is want. So, the simple question (for you, not for me) is:
What do you want for your life?
When you are honest with yourself, what is it that you really want to be?
What do you desire for your life?
Where do you desire to go?
Who do you desire to be?
What do you desire to have?
Now, understand this isn’t a question about what is possible, or reasonable, or any of that. I’m asking about desire. Whatever you came up with, right it down. YES. IT MATTERS. WRITE IT DOWN ON PAPER.
MY BOYHOOD GOALS
When I was a little boy, i loved entertaining my mom and grandma with little songs. I’d even pretend to be a fake talk show host and guest at the same time. I loved(still do) running my mouth. When asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I wanted to be a designer of cool (no beige) prosthetic limbs for people. I thought they deserved something like, fire engine red.
Now, i’m doing something different for work, but i love bringing clarity to people. That’s pretty much my purpose.
