Meditations of Marshal Mathers

Dun, dun, dun. Dun dun dun. Dun dun Duuuuuuuuuuun!

Eye of Tiger. One of my favorite types of music, the Anthem. Part fight song, part cheer, all feel good. The type of song that comes on and you just get so jacked you feel like you can do anything, like Terry Tate Office Linebacker.

I love songs like that. For me right now, the latest anthem I can’t stop listening to is Survival by Eminem.

He’s not everyones cup of tea, and this song just hits me on so man levels. Great beat, sexy hook sung by Liz Rodrigues.

but most importantly it’s the message. Here’s and example:

First verse:

Wasn’t ready to be no millionaire, I was ill-prepared
, I was prepared to be ill though, the skill was there

From the beginning, it wasn’t ’bout the ends
It was ‘bout busting raps and standing for something – fuckin’ acronym

He’s talking about not being quote/unquote ready, while at the same time totally having the drive to make a difference. Good start.

The end part, the bit about f*ing acronym? This is where he shows that he’s a genius.

An acronym BY DEFINITION, stands for something. GENIUS.

Last verse then I have to grab some tea.

I must be allergic to failure, cause every time I come close to it, I just sneeze, But I just go atchoo then A-chieve!

Lots of folks are afraid to fail. Shit, I’ve even had those moments. Mr. Mathers shares that its common. Everyone reacts to it. The question is…what are you going to DO when it happens?

For such a short, infectious track, ($1.29 on iTunes) there is more than enough inspiration for me.

What is your go-to song?
