The internet is a big place. With so many blogs and sharing sites from flickr to facebook it can be a challenge to know what’s going on. I’m going to show you how to in 2010 make sure your digital ear is to the ground and check your online reputation. You will know is being said about you, and where.

Lets get started.

  • First, go to Google Alerts
  • In the “Search Terms” box enter your name in quotations. e.g “Jane Doe”
  • For “How Oftern” choose “Once a day”
  • In the “Deliver to” box select your email address OR, if you use RSS choose “Feed”
  • Click create alert.

There you have it. Now Google will scour the interwebs for your search term and serve you up the results with no additional effort from you. You may be surprised what you find.

Funny story. Using the method listed above I found out almost immediately when my little brother wrecked his sailboat, spent the night stranded on an island on the Columbia, and had to be rescued. Then I accidentally broke the news to the family before he told anyone.

Also worth doing is searching your email addresses and/or email nicknames. If you use a special nickname across multiple sites, it's interesting to see where it ends up, and who might be sharing your internet-nickname on sites you don't use, i.e. bulletin boards, other social networks, etc.

Wow David! You're like a little Anderson Cooper! I hope he was allright.

Matt, you are right, the method above can be used for any term. It's how i found out about the other Sean Oliver.

Apparently not a good idea for me, as there's a reporter at the Sun Herald in Mississippi with my name…Bummer. VERY interesting and cool idea though. I didn't know I could set google up to do automatic searches. Now I just have to find other interesting ways to use it!

Yeah, you can use it to keep track of brands, companies, and people you want up to the minute deets on.
